The appeal of 32 bit float is being able to accommodate and scale down the unexpected peak that goes over 0. If I import a normalized 32 bit float file into Logic, and Logic converts it to 24 bit, will it sound as good as a recording originally made in 24 bit? Very likely not. I’m not sure if normalizing audio files to 0dB is a good idea. Because it’s always good to have a bit of headroom for any conversion and playback situation. There is also no advantage in having the files normalized automatically, since the files can be leveled more sensibly later.
Interestingly, Logic can handle bit files when it comes to freezing. Frozen audio files are bit files. Unfortunately, Apple ignores user requests to include bit file functionality like other professional audio software does, and despite the fact more and more mastering studios ask for 32 bit files. There are beginning to be bit float recorders out there Zoom F6 and SoundDevices MixPre II series among them , and I have found the feature to be more useful than might be initially obvious to us as audio engineers doing primarily music.
It’s quite remarkable, actually, and I believe this will eventually change our industry. That is, an input could actually be recorded so hot as to render the resulting audio file to be flat as a pancake, and it can easily be recovered at the mix or mastering stage by simply reducing the gain digitally. No distortion. And it really does sound absolutely fine. Likewise when recording too low: you can bring up the resulting file with digital gain, and there is essentially no change in the noise floor whatsoever.
As a recordist with 24 years of experience, I have never seen anything like this. It’s truly remarkable. But it won’t work in Logic, because Logic can’t handle the bit float files. It still converts them to bit, which does not allow the behavior I’ve described above.

The 32 bits “debate” is only about the interface between the physical and the digital worlds. To understand how futile it is, just try to translate a 32 bits depth in electromagnetic physics. Many mastering studios ask for bit audio these days. It’s an obvious question: why can’t Logic play bit files? Even QuickTime Player is able to play them. My feeling is that 32 bits thing is more marketing for now. Why not 64 or bits? Most of current 32 bits files are just 16 bits or 24 bits padded files. Aug 4, PM.
Yes, and even FCPX can play bit files and recover too-low or too-hot information. Logic really needs to be able to do this, too. Adobe Audition can do it, Reaper can do it Well, except it’s not just marketing in the example I provided above. The bit depth is basically your noise floor. The higher the bit depth the greater the dynamic range, and the lower your noise floor.
That’s the key point. Logic works at 32 bit float internally. When you make a recording your AD would clip anything over 0dbfs. On playback you can push the tracks way way louder, actually into the red but here’s the catch. It has to, at some point come out into the real world and pass through your DA to get to the real world.
If you’re at the point where you’re being sent or are recording so hot that you are clipping your outputs then you need to grasp your gain structure. Your bit depth gives you greater dynamic range and you need that extended dynamic range as it is a multitrack recordiing. The gain gets summed into your 2 bus.
The greater dynamic range enables you to keep the tracking gains way lower and not suffer any noise. Internally in logic, gains can be passed between plug-ins much safer as it’s very easy to clip a plug-in.
The thing with bit depth is that it will never ever be perfect no matter how much computer CPU cycles you throw at it unless the bit depth became infinite. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be perfect. The quietest gear these days is still noisier than a 24 bit noise floor. Way noisier. If the recorded tracks are not clipping at 32 bit float, they won’t clip at 24 bit fixed. If they are clipped then there’s little chance of me doing a decent mix.
If the signals are hot but not clipped I pull all the faders down. Last song I mixed I had to start with all faders aside from the master at -5dbfs. There’s little point in having an extended dynamic range if it’s not used. Yes, it would be handy if Logic could import the 32 bit float files and not convert them but it’s never been a problem for me as the final output song will always come down to a fixed bit depth.
